What Is a Reading Time Calculator?

Reading time is calculated by dividing the total word count by the average reading speed. The average adult reads silently at approximately 200 to 250 words per minute (wpm) for comprehension. Technical or dense content may slow reading to 150 wpm, while light fiction can be read at 300+ wpm. Our calculator uses a default of 238 wpm, which research suggests is the average for general web content. Speaking time for presentations is typically slower at 130 to 150 wpm to allow for pauses and emphasis.

Reading Time Calculator Formula

The formula for reading time is: Reading Time (minutes) = Total Word Count ÷ Words Per Minute. For example, a 1,000-word article at 250 wpm = 4 minutes. For speaking time, use 130 to 150 wpm instead of 250.

A 2,000-word blog post at 250 wpm = 2,000 ÷ 250 = 8 minutes reading time. The same text read at 200 wpm = 10 minutes. For a presentation spoken at 140 wpm = approximately 14 minutes.

Tips for Using This Reading Time Calculator

Add estimated reading time to your blog posts to set reader expectations — studies show this increases engagement. For dense technical content, use a lower wpm estimate. For fiction or light content, use a higher estimate. Remember that reading time does not account for images, charts, or videos, which add to the total time spent on the page. When estimating speaking time for a presentation, practice aloud and time yourself — the calculator gives a starting point, but personal speaking pace varies significantly.
